Importance of Marketing for an Event Emcee
Marketing and sales are very important for any organization. Not only for organizations, they are important for individuals too. However not many are aware of this especially in my own industry. Yes, a lot of event emcees who approach me for training back out when I ask them to learn marketing. I wanted to educate them on the importance of marketing for an event emcee. That has made me write this article. Actually I shot it as a video and have transcribed it now.
Hi! I’m Thamizharasan Karunakaran, an Event Emcee based at Chennai. I have been hosting events like Birthday Parties, Corporate Team Building Activities, Conferences, Out Bound Training, Product Launches, Dealers Meet, Mall Activities, Wedding Receptions . Sangeet, Get togethers, Cricket Matches, Quiz Shows, etc. in Bengaluru, Chennai and other parts of Tamilnadu. I have also planted the seeds to expand across India.
When someone asks me to train them on emceeing, more than focusing on emcee training I focus on marketing training. This is what I have learnt from my mentor Dr Maharaja SivaSubramanian N. Whatever the industry you are into, sales and marketing is very very important for you. A lot of people think that they don’t have any products with them, then why should they know about marketing. Marketing is not just about products and services; even if you are employee you need to market yourself. You need to sell yourself in an interview. So whoever you are, you have to know sales and marketing. Hence if you are an event emcee (MC) , you should definitely know marketing.
How are you going to get orders in the competitive industry?
Teaching games for emceeing is not a big deal. But after learning games, you need to market yourself to get more orders. A lot of people already keep saying it’s a competitive industry. So in this competitive industry how are you going to get orders? That’s the reason you need to learn sales and marketing.
Social Media Marketing platforms:
Once you have come into event industry basic marketing that are needed for you are : You should have
- a website
- a Facebook page
- a Facebook personal profile
- a Facebook personal page
- accounts in other major social media like Linked in, google plus, twitter, pinterest, instagram, medium, tumblr, etc.
Social Media Marketing flow:
You have to be active in all these social media. Having profile alone is not enough in Facebook, you should have a page for professional purpose. Whatever you want to share, first share it in your website and then share it in your Facebook page. All other shares go from here as a link. You can share in facebook groups, linkedin, twitter, Google plus, etc.

Is Social media a time killer?
Basic thing is you should have account in all these social media. I have seen a lot of people proudly saying that they are not in any social media as it’s a time killer. I’ll never agree to this. It’s our own discipline that helps us how we handle social media. Yes, sometimes we may get little bit of distraction and deviation in social media. But social media is not the only source where we get diversion, there are a lot others too. So it’s in our hands how we use it.
Why my focus is on Social media and online marketing?
The main reason why I talk a lot about social media is that it’s absolutely free; you are not going to spend any money on marketing when you do through social media. Most of the training we give on online marketing helps you to maintain zero budget for your marketing. At the maximum you will be spending some amount for website.
Shall I do marketing in my own way?
One of the quotes I have written recently “The more you invest in training the less you spend for marketing”. My marketing budget is usually zero. Also when you spend on marketing, you are spending for a particular domain and for a limited period of time. Whereas if you invest on training, whatever you learn is for lifetime and can be applied in any walks of life. That’s the basic connection I see between training and marketing. Invest in training, use that knowledge and do marketing. Its not that your marketing budget has to be zero always, you can also spend money on marketing when needed. But you should know where to spend it wisely, for which proper training is needed.
So to sum up this article, I would like to mention just two things:
- Be active in social media and do online marketing
- Learn marketing from experts and apply them
One important thing I would like to stress is “be action oriented”. After attending training, if you are going to be idle without applying them or without taking any actions, you are not going to get any results. So “Be action oriented”; that’s the key to success. All the best.
