What is a Sangeet Ceremony (Musical Evening) ?

After I entered into event industry, I have been regularly hosting birthday parties, mall activities and corporate events. But there was one word which I had been hearing occasionally but I never knew what it was. The word was “Sangeet”. I heard that “Sangeet” was also one type of event and I never knew what it was. The moment I realized that I need to know something about Sangeet, came a knocking opportunity for me.

Thank you Jayshree for that start. The very same day I decided that I need to host a Sangeet soon and my dream also came true in a couple of months. Eventually I hosted the Sangeet of a Film Fraternity’s family as well. Yes, along with my Co-host Emcee Nandhini I hosted the Sangeet of Divya Priya (Daughter of Mr Ravi Kumar and Grand daughter of Mr Changaiah, Proprietor of Ravi Prasad Units, Studios and Labs).

Before I proceed further, a small intro about me. I’m Thamizharasan Karunakaran, an Event Emcee (Master of Ceremonies / Master of Ceremony / MC ) based at Chennai. I have been hosting events like Birthday Parties, Corporate Team Building Activities, Conferences, Out Bound Training, Product Launches, Dealers Meet, Mall Activities, Wedding Receptions, Sangeet, Get together, Cricket Matches, Quiz Shows, etc. in Bengaluru, Chennai and other parts of Tamilnadu. I have also planted the seeds to expand across India.

What is a Sangeet Ceremony?

Sangeet is a pre-wedding celebration (Musical evening) held 2 or 3days before a wedding to make the close friends and close relatives of bride and groom to mingle with each other and get entertained too. They do have dance parties, drinks parties, Mehndi stalls, etc.

Where does Sangeet originated from?

Sangeet is a Sanskrit word which when translated gives the meaning “Sung together”. As the name denotes it’s a Musical Evening with music, songs and dance. Earlier Sangeet was meant only for bride’s side and female relatives and it was common only in North India (especially in Punjabi wedding). But gradually Sangeet culture changed and groom side also takes part and it’s spreading in South India too.

What is the timing for a Sangeet Ceremony?

Typically a Sangeet function starts at 6pm and ends by 9 or 10pm. Once the bride and the groom arrive, the Master of Ceremonies (Event Emcee / Event Host) welcomes them, welcomes the guests and start the show. Bride and the groom, and their friends and relatives perform dance in the Sangeet. They would have undergone a couple of weeks practice for this.  Also there would be Mehndi stall where women can get decorated their hands with Mehndi.

Role of the Master of Ceremonies (Event Emcee) in a Sangeet Function :

Once the Master of Ceremonies completes his / her introduction, he / she welcome the dance performers. In between the dance performances, the MC engages and entertains the guests through his / her games. Majority of cases dance performances are pre-planned and practiced and sometimes they are spontaneous. At the end of all the performances, the Master of Ceremonies initiates the dance floor on one side and announces the dinner on the other side. Guests keep dancing for the DJ’s beats till they get exhausted or till it becomes too late.

DJ’s role is very very important in a Sangeet as it’s a musical evening. A well-qualified DJ is needed to play the beats (music) based on the guests’ mood. DJ has to keep changing songs to retain the mood and keep increasing the tempo.
